Peripheral Arterial Disease

(Leg Doppler)

Arteries are the blood vessels which carry blood from the heart to different organs of the body (eg. arms and legs). Blood contains oxygen which serves as fuel for the different organs of the body.

Artery

Flow reaching the legs can be reduced or stopped when arteries become narrowed or blocked with plaque or blood clots.

Obstruction of blood flow in leg arteries is called peripheral arterial disease (PAD). This is characterised by a symptom called “intermittent claudication”- which is leg pain experienced whilst walking, and relieved by rest.

In the absence of prompt intervention, intermittent claudication can progress to rest pain, and then to tissue loss (ulceration) and gangrene.
